HomeWho We AreFrom Our Place to Your PlaceQue Dice?

(As dictated by Apples to Jeff,
who, according to Susan,
doesn't always hear exactly what was said.)

When I first met Greg McVey, my trainer, I was a wild range bronc who could jump the corral fence from a flat-footed start. At the slightest starting noise, I could go from 0 to 40 mph in 5 seconds regardless of who was dragging behind on the lead rope. Then, after what seemed like months of captivity and training by Greg and Robert (love at first sight - on his part), I learned to be a calm saddle horse that can be ridden by little old ladies from Pasadena. I do want to apologize for beating up on Mr. Turner when we were corral mates and I had all my body parts. And I know I am not supposed to admit this in public, but that conceited Olenas Pirate on page 1 is my younger half-brother.

Signed,

Apples (a.k.a. ‘El Gato')

Greg McVey is a fine horseman and trainer.  I had the experience to assist Greg in training my horse, that I got from Jeff and Susan.  Greg does very fine work.  My horse Apples, was two and a half, when Greg first started working with him.  Apples had to be herded into the trailer the day he was taken to Greg's place for training, and within the first week, you could actually get your hands on him and pet him nearly all over.  Again, Apples would run from you in the pasture; there was no way to touch him until  after Greg started him.  I plan to finish Apples as a cutting horse, and am very pleased with the quality of training that Greg produces.  Greg produces high quality training, and is straight forward with the progress that is made.   I really liked working with Greg, and I am now training horses in Las Cruces, NM using Greg's methods.  The people I work for like the way I train, and I told them I learned from Greg McVey!!  As a  owner and having had the chance to learn from Greg, I would let nobody else train my horses.

Greg McVey

Roswell, NM

Greg McVey and his wife, Shirley, live near Roswell, New Mexico.  Originally from Kansas and ‘all over the U.S.' they take in young horses for training and/or finishing and ‘problem' horses for ‘re-training'.
During his varied career, Greg has ridden, roped, ranched, doctored cattle, managed feedlots, and sold feed and various ranch supplies. Greg is a professional roper and has trained hundreds of horses in his career. Maybe that's why he is always trying to turn our show horses into roping horses. Anyway, he knows horses and the livestock industry.

Teaching a horse to lounge without a halter or lead rope is one of Greg's specialities. According to Greg, when a horse is lounged with voice commands and is not restrained by a lounge rope, the horse responds because he wants to and not because he feels he has to.
Greg never yells or raises his voice during this training session.  When Greg says ‘yup' or ‘whoa', his voice is low, yet commanding.  He believes that a low voice causes the horse to listen carefully and the horse will be more attentive. He says that getting a horse to listen to you also makes it much easier to teach a horse how to respond to the bit and reins.
Greg says each horse has to be treated and trained as an individual. There are some standard training techniques, but you have to understand a horse's disposition and what s/he is thinking before you can prescribe an effective recipe to get the desired response to a particular training technique. He may not be a ‘horse whisperer', but he's a pretty good ‘horse listener'.
